As part of a 16-pass move, Welbeck ran from 36.07 yards out before cutting through the Saints defence to receive a perfect assist from Lucas Pérez.

After taking a touch, he dinked the ball towards goal at an angle of 15.83 degrees from a distance of 12.77 yards.

Lewis rushed out but the rising shot cleared him by 15 cms before dipping just enough to kiss the underside of the bar and go in for Arsenal to take a 1-0 lead.

It was the beginning of a massacre.

Welbeck added another and Arsenal romped home to a 5-0 win. It was Southampton’s heaviest FA Cup home defeat since 1910.

Welbeck scored another seven minutes later before Theo Walcott helped himself to a hat-trick.

Welbeck has been out recovering from knee surgery, but his return will be welcome relief to Arsene Wenger.

The Arsenal boss, watching from the stands while serving a touchline ban, said after the match: “We were very dynamic, explosive and overall we had a good consistent performance over 90 minutes and everybody played well.

"Welbeck has been out for such a long time, I didn't expect him to score straight away and it shows the desire is there.

"People say I make changes but I bring in Walcott, Welbeck and Perez, all top-quality players. After that I try to find the best balance for the team."
