Tottenham 4 Wycombe Wanderers 3: Heung-min Son breaks Wycombe hearts with 96th minute winner
Wycombe Wanderers looked to have held Tottenham to a famous replay only for Son to strike with a cruel blow to the League Two side
Heung-min Son saved Tottenham's blushes in the 96th minute to break Wycombe Wanderers hearts in a seven goal thriller after trailing 2-0 at half-time.
It was one hell of a performance from Wycombe as they shook White Hart Lane in to silence, the League Two outfit played as if they were a top-flight club to prove the magic of the cup is still very much alive.
A Paul Hayes double in the first half stunned Tottenham as Wycombe led 2-0 at the break.
Son scored Spurs' fist goal on the hour mark before Vincent Janssen scored from the penalty spot to level things up.
Tottenham had to finish the match with 10 men when Kieran Trippier was forced off with 15 minutes to go with a hip injury, having made all three substitutions, Mauricio Pochettino had no choice but to see the remainder of match out with a man down.
Gary Thompson looked to have added a further twist to the tale with a header six minutes from time, only for Dele Alli to score in the 89th minute before Son hit the dramatic late winner.
FACTS, STATS, GOALS AND LOLS
- THERE was a nice touch before kick off as Tottenham players warmed up
T-shirts emblazoned with a get well message to their former team-mate
Ryan Mason, who is recovering from the fractured skull he suffered
playing for Hull at Chelsea on Sunday.
THE 4,000 travelling fans were unfazed by their big day out as they
taunted their hosts with: “You’re only here to see the Wycombe.” - TOTTENHAM boss Mauricio Pochettino made nine changes to the team that
started last week’s 2-2 draw at Manchester City with only Eric Dier
and Kevin Wimmer keeping their places. - WYCOMBE almost made a dream start when Paul Hayes headed against the
bar in the first minute. He should have scored. - SAM WOOD then went close again for the Chairboys when he spotted
Michel Vorm off his line and tried an audacious long-range effort
which bounced just wide of the post, much to Tottenham’s relief. - SPURS should have taken the lead in 18th minute when their on-loan
Chelsea keeper Jamal Blackman made a real hash of trying to punch
clear Wood’s header back to him and gifted the ball to Heung-min Son.
But the South Korean striker failed to take advantage as he fired wide
of an empty net. - HAYES saw a 25-yard shot brilliantly tipped around the post by Vorm.
Then from the resulting corner the Wycombe frontman atoned for his
earlier miss by volleying Josh Onomah’s headed clearance into the top
corner to put the League Two club 1-0 up in the 23rd minute. - HAYES then turned hero at the other end as he blocked Moussa Sissoko’s
close-range shot on the line in a goalmouth scramble before Blackman
got down to well to save Son’s shot. - AND Hayes fired Wycombe 2-0 up from the penalty spot in the 37th
minute after ref Roger East ruled that Spurs defender Cameron
Carter-Vickers had fouled Wood in the area. - TOTTENHAM were booed by their own fans at half time for the first time in ages.
- POCHETTINO sent on Vincent Janssen for Georges-Kevin Nkoudou at half
time. The Dutch striker had a decent shout for a pen when Aaron Pierre
tripped him in the box in the 50th minute. - SON’S deflected shot may have pulled a goal back on the hour mark but
he needs to practise on his shooting as before then he had cleared the
bar more times than Dick Fosbury. - AS Wycombe ran down the clock with 35 minutes to go their fans sang:
“Timewasting b*****ds, we know what we are…” - JANSSEN made it 2-2 from the spot after Pierre fouled him in the box.
