Arsenal were fully aware of the striker's £86m release clause, a fee more than DOUBLE the £42m they paid for record signing Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid in 2013.
United are confident they can land Griezmann, who has been receiving calls EVERY day by national team-mate Paul Pogba.
It is thought the Red Devils would offer Griezmann more money than Arsenal, though the Gunners are prepared to stump up more than £250,000 a week on a player of his calibre.
Atletico's audacious bid to sign Alexis Sanchez could become part of a swap deal.
Meanwhile, Atletico boss Diego Simeone revealed he would not attempt to block a move for star striker Griezmann, who has 14 goals in all competitions this season.
He said: "I don't tie anybody down. I simply work in order to continue getting better for the good of the club.
"He [Griezmann] is in an extraordinary moment, he is working well, he has got back on the scoresheet. He is currently in great form and it's normal that the top clubs in the world want him.
"I'm not surprised that those that can afford him are seeking him."
Griezmann is also reportedly subject to a £110m bid from cash-rich Inter Milan.
The Italian giants also want Simeone to boss the club back to Serie A glory.
