Wayne Rooney collects Golden Boot from Bobby Charlton after breaking Manchester United legend’s goal record
Red Devils honoured Rooney before match against Wigan after he overtook Charlton last week to become the club's all-time record scorer
WAYNE ROONEY was honoured by Bobby Charlton before Man United's FA Cup tie against Wigan at Old Trafford after becoming the club's all-time record goalscorer last week.
A last minute free kick at Stoke last week saw him beat Charlton's record and move on to 250 goals for United.
England and United legend Charlton handed Rooney the club's Golden Boot with both men being applauded by the Red Devils and Wigan fans.
Rooney's former Old Trafford teammate Rio Ferdinand claimed earlier in the week that the striker could have been as good as four-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo if he was more selfish.
Ferdinand played with Rooney and Ronaldo under Sir Alex Ferguson and said: “Cristiano had an absolute desire to be the best individual in the world.
“Wayne would say: ‘I want to be the world’s best but I’ll do it by being a team player’.
“That has not allowed him to be a 40-goals-a-season man he could have been.
"You have got to remember he was playing left-wing-half the time when Ronaldo was there for the last couple of years to cover full-backs who had started to attack more.
“He would do that with no questions asked. There are not a lot of players with Wayne Rooney’s profile who would have accepted that type of decision."
Rooney has been linked with a move to China, where he would earn an unprecedented £1million-a-week.
Having broken United's record, the England captain is believed to be considering a new challenge in the Far East.
