Just seven minutes later, and the home side went two up as central defender Harlee Dean headed home unmarked from Jota’s corner.
Brighton made more of a fight of it in the second half, but on 57 minutes the Bees got a penalty when Josh McEachran slid the ball through to Jota who was felled by Uwe Hunemeier.
But David Stockdale saved from Lasse Vibe to restore some kind of pride from a Seagulls side who have had a nightmare week, losing to Lincoln in the FA Cup before going down 3-1 away at Huddersfield.
And that save seemed to galvanise Christ Hughton's side, and in the 75th minute Solly March pulled one back with a superb strike into the top corner.
And moments later, Shane Duffy made it 2-2 with a powerful header from the excellent Anthony Knockaert's ball in.
Brighton so nearly got a third, Duffy the man again but this time he could not force the ball over the line and Daniel Bentley made a good save.
But in added time, sub defender for Brentford Kerschbaumer struck it home from 20 yards to give Brentford the lead again - but Israeli striker Tomer Hemed rescued a point for Brighton, turning home Knockaert's ccross.
