Arsenal and West Ham target Alexandre Lacazette nets 20 Ligue 1 goals for third consecutive season… not even Zlatan Ibrahimovic managed that!
Lacazette surpasses Swedish legend just days after Lyon's president said transfer speculation had left him 'destroyed psychologically'
ALEXANDRE LACAZETTE has equalled Jean-Pierre Papin's record by scoring 20 goals in three consecutive seasons for Lyon - a feat not even Zlatan Ibrahimovic has managed.
Arsenal target Lacazette netted in Lyon's 2-1 loss at Guingamp on Saturday afternoon.
Ibrahimovic scored an incredible 113 goals in 122 games, but wasn't able to equal Papin's achievement as he only found the net 19 times in the 2014/15 season.
Interestingly, Lacazette was the top scorer that year with 27 goals.
Marseille legend Papin achieved the landmark in 1992 and had only since been matched by former Portugal and PSG striker Pauleta, until this weekend.
Lacazette's achievement is even more remarkable given that Lyon's president said just two days ago that he had been "destroyed psychologically" by transfer talk.
The striker said in an interview that he would like to leave the French club during the summer.
But president Jean-Michel Aulas commented: "Alexandre is destroyed psychologically because of what’s happened and it [the interview] was based on a misunderstanding.
"Because Alexandre didn’t say that he wanted to leave Lyon to go and play for a big club. He was interviewed by one of your colleagues to talk about the derby and in the course of a sentence they said to him ‘but would you [leave one day]?’
"Alexandre hasn’t betrayed the club.
"He simply said that one day if like his friend Sam [Umtiti] he could go play for Barca or if like Karim Benzema, who left for Real Madrid and everyone was happy for him, he could go to a big club, he might.
"Why bring that out on the day of a derby [Lyon's 2-0 loss to Saint Etienne last week]?
"You’re putting huge pressure on kids… in front of thousands of people who don’t understand. I’m disappointed and it upset me."
