LEAGUE ONE basement boys Coventry City have appointed former boss Mark Robins after Russell Slade was sacked.

Robins returns to the Sky Blues for his second spell as boss, having been in charge at the Ricoh Arena between 2012 and 2013 before leaving for Huddersfield after just 146 days.

Robins rejoins on a contract "beyond the current season", and must surely prepare for life in League Two.

Ex-Leyton Orient chief Slade was sacked on Sunday with the club a staggering 13 points adrift of safety at the bottom of the table.

He won just three of his 16 matches at the helm, but did take them to Wembley in the final of the EFL Trophy, where they will play Oxford on 2 April.

Robins told the Coventry website: "I know the club well and it has been especially difficult to watch the struggles of this season from afar.

"My aim is to provide a change of fortune for this football club in the long-term, and build a team not only for now, but for the future of Coventry City."

Having managed Rotherham and Barnsley, Robins was first appointed manager of Coventry in September 2012 - and took the club from relegation battlers to play-off contenders.

But he jumped ship in early February 2013 to Championship club Huddersfield, before moving on to Scunthorpe in October 2014.

But he was sacked from there in January 2016 with the club six points above the League One relegation zone.

When he left the club first time round, he revealed that he had failed to get assurances from unpopular owners Sisu, around the time the club were embroiled in a rent row at the Ricoh, forcing them to play at Northampton Town's Sixfields stadium.

He said at the time: "I spoke to the owner, I sought assurances and didn’t get any assurances from the owner of Coventry.

“I absolutely wish them all the best, they work their socks off and as I’ve said before that club needs support from Coventry City Council."
