John Stones gets slated for poor display against Monaco as Manchester City concede three poor goals in the Champions League
Rio Ferdidand defends the England international who was heavily criticised as Pep Guardiola's side crashed out of Europe
JOHN STONES bore the brunt of the criticism on social media as Monaco scored three goals to knock Manchester City out of the Champions League.
The Ligue 1 leaders blew City away with two first-half goals, with Kylian Mbappe scoring inside ten minutes before Fabinho added a second.
And as the decisive third goal was headed in by Tiemoue Bakayoko from a set piece, the England international was hung out to dry on Twitter.
After the match, Stones admitted his side were not defensively solid enough in the game, especially when dealing with set pieces.
The 22-year-old said: "Very sloppy. Not up to our standard in the first half. We wanted to correct that but we weren't clinical enough in both boxes.
"We didn't score enough and weren't defensively solid enough.
"The second half didn't reflect the whole scoreline. We were the City people know from this season. We should have scored more. It is a difficult one for us to take. We should have done better and deserve to be in the next round.
"The gaffer was saying before that the more and more he plays the Champions League it is about the set-pieces. Real Madrid scored from two last week and went through. We weren't solid enough."
Whilst working as a pundit for BT Sport, Rio Ferdinand showed sympathy for the centre half and says he did not recieve enough support from his teammate.
The Manchester United legend said: "I felt sorry for Stones, he was isolated.
"The players behind him showed no communication. Stones can do nothing about this [Fabinho goal]. I'd have been fuming."
Football fans reiterated the fact City forked out a staggering £50million to sign the 24-year-old from Everton last summer.
