The ex-Tottenham striker has netted 14 times in the Premier League this term and it finally sees his hot form can no longer be overlooked.

Many considered Defoe's career to be over when he upped sticks and moved to MLS side Toronto FC.

However, since joining the Black Cats in 2014, there have been few, if any, better English strikers around - and Southgate has moved quickly to reinstate him.

In fact, despite Sunderland's struggles, Defoe has netted 33 times in 74 Premier League appearances.

The former West Ham forward has netted 19 times in 55 caps for England and will be hoping to add to that tally in the coming week.

His last game in the Three Lions jersey was in the friendly against Chile in November 2013 - a 2-0 loss.

Meanwhile, there is no Marcus Rashford, Nathan Redmond or James Ward-Prowse in the England Under-21s squad.

The Young Lions are set to take on Germany and Denmark in the coming week - but it would now appear their star trio will be named in Southgate's full England squad.

Jake Livermore is also expected to be a surprise call-up, as Jack Wilshere misses out.
