Newcastle want to sign Gylfi Sigurdsson with Rafa Benitez believing Swansea man can spearhead first season back in the Premier League

Playmaker has spoken openly about wanting to sign for one of Europe's top clubs and will cost around £15million in the summer

NEWCASTLE boss Rafa Benitez wants to sign Gylfi Sigurdsson for around £15million in the summer to spearhead their first season back in the Premier League.

The Swansea playmaker has been getting rave reviews from his boss Paul Clement, who has come in and turned the strugglers around.

And Spaniard Benitez - who has guided Toon to the top of the Championship - wants owner Mike Ashley to stump up the cash for the Iceland ace in the summer if they win promotion.

Former Tottenham star Sigurdsson, 27, has openly spoken about his desire leave south Wales and move to one of Europe's big teams.

And former Liverpool boss Benitez believes he is going to turn the Toon into a force once he gets them back into the Premier League.

Newcastle are a point clear of Brighton on top of the Championship table - but have a seven point cushion to third place having been relegated from the top flight last campaign.

A source told SunSport: "Rafa knows he can't just go out there and buy the biggest names in their first season back - but Gylfi would be a good-value addition to his squad."

West Ham, Everton and Southampton are also all interested in snapping up the Icelandic ace, who also starred for his country at Euro 2016.
