The 20-year-old was not expected to make such a big impact abroad, but one man who has certainly been impressed is Chelsea boss Antonio Conte.

Also confirming Mahmoud Dahoud’s transfer to Borussia Dortmund, Gladbach sporting director Max Eberl revealed: “Christensen must go back to Chelsea. Those are the two players that we have to replace in the summer.”

Christensen’s return could spell the end of John Terry’s playing career in west London, with the Chelsea skipper out of contract at the end of the season.

And competition for places is sure to be fierce, with Cesar Azpilicueta, David Luiz and Gary Cahill establishing themselves as the first-choice backline this term.

Kurt Zouma and Nathan Ake are also desperate to make their mark in the team, and it could be that the youngsters are handed their chance in the EFL Cup and Champions League group stage instead.
