And before the match with Osasuna, a giant bannter spreading over two tiers of the Nou Camp read "Gracias Leo" with the number 500 in huge orange type.

Since joining the Catalan giants in 2004, the Argentine has established himself as the best player in world football and has scored over 40 goals each season since 2009.

With his stunning final second winner in El Clasico against Real Madrid, he sent Luis Enrique's side to the top of the La Liga table.

And it only took Messi 12 minutes to extend his Barca goal tally against bottom-of-the-table Osasuna, breaking in behind the opposition defence to lob over the goalkeeper - as the adoring crowd chanted his name.

It was his 32nd league goal this season, meaning Messi has now more than any other player in Europe’s top 5 leagues.

And Barca increased their lead minutes later when midfielder Andre Gomes finished smartly on the half-volley.
