Tony Adams revealed the incident that took place in the Arsenal dressing room in his new autobiography Sober — exclusively serialised this week in The Sun.
The Gunners took the lead through Freddie Ljungberg inside the final 20 minutes in Cardiff.
But Wenger and skipper Adams were stunned as a Michael Owen double gave Liverpool the spoils.
Adams explains: "After we lost the FA Cup final to Liverpool at Cardiff in the 2001 FA Cup final, Arsene threw his runners-up medal in a dressing-room bin.
"He does have a temper and it hit him deeply, though usually, being a clever man, he would take himself out of the room to vent his anger.

"I’m not a great loser either, but by now I could take it better, so I picked the medal out of the bin and put it back in Arsène’s hand.
"‘Look,’ I said to everyone, ‘let’s remember how this feels. Let’s come back and win it next year.’"
