Middlesbrough want talks with Garry Monk about leading them back to the Premier League, SunSport understands.
Boro supremo Steve Gibson will start the search for a new boss this week and is keen on Monk whose deal at Leeds United is about to end.
Gibson was hoping that caretaker Steve Agnew would make a big pitch for the job but his results have been disappointing.
Monk cut his teeth at Swansea in the Premier League, but was sacked after less than two years in charge at the Liberty.
He then took over at Elland Road last summer and took Leeds to seventh in the Championship, the top English boss in the division.

Boro have been inundated with interested managers, and Gibson may speak to a handful although Monk has now emerged as the top candidate.
