Gibson was hoping that caretaker Steve Agnew would make a big pitch for the job but his results have been disappointing.

Monk cut his teeth at Swansea in the Premier League, but was sacked after less than two years in charge at the Liberty.

He then took over at Elland Road last summer and took Leeds to seventh in the Championship, the top English boss in the division.

Boro have been inundated with interested managers, and Gibson may speak to a handful although Monk has now emerged as the top candidate.

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has been linked with the vacancy at the Riverside following the departure of Aitor Karanka in March.
