Huddersfield hero Christopher Schindler ready to ‘party’ after firing Terriers into the Premier League
German star in dreamland as Michael Hefele admits to feeling 'just crazy' after defeating Reading at Wembley
CHRISTOPHER SCHINDLER admits he is ready to “party” after he fired Huddersfield Town to the Premier League.
The German centre-half stepped-up to convert the winning spot-kick as the Terriers defeated Reading 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw at Wembley in the Championship play-off final.
And after holding his nerve to fire his side into the top-flight for the first time since 1972, the 27-year-old says he is in dreamland.
Schindler said: “My heart rate was really high I think. I don't think anyone is feeling 100 per cent comfortable taking a penalty in this pressure but you have to believe.
“It's hard to say something to this feeling, it's unbelievable. I think we put so much effort and heart all season.
“This game today, another 120 minutes I think we deserved it and this feeling is unbelievable now.
“It's the team, I'm so happy that I'm here in this wonderful team and that I'm England.
“I think we’re going to party after the long season.”
Town looked as if they had blown their chance of promotion when they fell behind in the shootout as Michael Hefele missed their second.
But Liam Moore’s blazed effort over the crossbar allowed them to level before goalkeeper Danny Ward dived to his left to deny Jordan Obita, allowing Schindler to take the glory.
Ward said: “It’s unbelievable. That and the semi-final just summed our season up to be honest.
“The grit and desire was unbelievable. The work that goes on that no-one sees on the training ground, double sessions… It is real graft and determination.
“It’s something that I have never seen before and it was just deserved.”
Hefele added: “This has nothing to do with a dream. This is a reality.
“These guys have achieved such a big thing - such a small club to be in the best league in the world. Just crazy.”
