Manchester United star Michael Carrick shares rare footage of him at 13 in Newcastle kit as veteran prepares for testimonial game
Teen reveals football philosophy on 'Live & Kicking': 'When I get the ball I like trying to give it to other players and lay it off'
MICHAEL CARRICK has been treated to a blast from the past in the build-up to his testimonial match on Sunday.
Manchester United have posted footage from the children's live TV show 'Live & Kicking'...in a Newcastle shirt.
It shows the ex-West Ham and Tottenham playmaker being interviewed at home and filmed in action for his local boy's team - Wallsend Boys Club.
Presenter Andi Peters got it right when he introduced fresh-faced Newcastle United fan Carrick as 'one of this country's future footballing stars'.
And the composed teenager quickly reveals his football philosophy - one that has stood him in such good stead.
Says the 13-year-old Carrick, who has signed a new one-year deal to stay at Old Trafford:
"I sit in the changing rooms and thinking about who we're playing, if they're any good or if we should beat them. I don't get nervous before games.
"When I get the ball I like trying to give it to other players and lay it off. I don't always want to score goals myself.
"I try to give it to other players to give them a chance as well.'"
The short clip also shows teenager Carrick telling mum Lynn that she has "missed a bit" when scrubbing his boots.
He says: "My mum cleans my boots for me because when I come in I just don't do it. "I say 'I was going to but you got there first'."
Carrick, now 35, joined United for £18.6million from Spurs in 2006 and has made over 300 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils.
His testimonial game will be between Manchester United’s 2008 XI and Michael Carrick’s all-time XI.
Sir Alex Ferguson will manage the United XI while Harry Redknapp takes charge of the all-star XI.
