The oldest rivalry in international football history pits the two ‘Auld Enemies’ against each other for 114th time since the first meeting in 1872.

A win for Scotland would be greeted with the same sense of joy as England’s World Cup triumph in 1966.

But do they have any realistic chance?

Here’s a look back at the last five Hampden Park meetings between the pair.

An appalling qualifying campaign by Kevin Keegan’s England was salvaged only by a 2-0 win for Sweden over Poland in the final match allowing the Three Lions to squeak into a play-off spot.

Amazingly, Scotland had been in pot one while the likes of world champions France were only second seeds.

However, they finished behind the Czech Republic.

England won this the first leg courtesy of two Paul Scholes goals.

However, Don Hutchison scored the only goal for the Scots at Wembley, meaning Keegan’s men sneaked through again.

Qualifying was clearly a blueprint for the main event as England twice let leads slip to exit Euro 2000 at the group stage.

For those who aren’t aware, the Rous Cup was a tournament based around England-Scotland rivalry.

In the later years, a South American side would be invited to make it a three-team competition — on this occasion, Chile.

England opened with a 0-0 draw against La Roja, before facing the Auld Enemy.

And, goals from Chris Waddle and Steve Bull were enough to secure a comfortable win for the visitors.

Scotland did finally have something to smile about when beat Chile 2-0 in their final game.

However, that result meant England won the cup.

Brazil were the third wheel on this occasion.

And the gulf in class was evident as the Samba stars added yet another trophy to their burgeoning collection.

The tournament opened with a 1-1 draw between England and Brazil with Mirandinha cancelling out Gary Lineker’s opener a minute later.

Scotland’s first match was against their arch-rivals.

But a dour game ended in a 0-0 draw.

Brazil beat the Scots 2-0 at Hampden to claim the honours.

This it. Scotland’s last home win over England — 33 years ago.

At this time, it was just the two teams involved.

Boss Jock Stein boasted what many believe to have been the Scots’ beat team of all time.

With several of Aberdeen’s Uefa Cup Winners’ Cup winners from two years previous in their ranks as well as the likes of Graeme Souness and Barcelona’s Steve Archibald.

And they showed their superiority when Richard Gough scored the game’s only goal on 69 minutes.

This was to be Scotland’s only Rous Cup success in its five-year existence.

This was the 100th anniversary of the first tournament, but only the 87th edition due to cancellations for the two World Wars and 1981 troubles in Northern Ireland.

It was also the final year it was played.

Scotland kicked off with a 2-0 loss against Northern Ireland, before beating Wales 2-1.

England then beat the Irish 1-0 and lost by the same scoreline against the Welsh in Wrexham.

Wales and Northern Ireland drew 1-1 meaning the latter would win the tournament on goal difference unless there was a winner between Scotland and England.

But there wasn’t, with Mark McGhee’s opener for the hosts cancelled out by Tony Woodcock.
