Antoine Griezmann ‘WILL still sign for Manchester United’, despite signing a new contract at Atletico Madrid
French forward penned a new five-year deal at the La Liga giants this week, but is set to leave for Old Trafford next year
ANTOINE GRIEZMANN will still sign for Manchester United despite signing a new contract at Atletico Madrid.
The French forward, 26, will spend one more season at the La Liga giants before finally making his move to Old Trafford official, according to reports.
Griezmann had been widely tipped to join Jose Mourinho's squad all year - but things fell through after the star opted to stay at Atletico, signing a new five-year deal.
The Spanish side are still banned from recruiting players due to a breach of Fifa rules regarding the signing of youngsters, with Griezmann deciding to not leave the club in the lurch.
Griezmann said: "The sanction of the CAS has fallen. Atletico can not recruit. With my sports adviser, Eric Olhats, we decided to stay.
"It’s a hard time for the club. It would be a blow to go now. We talked to the club and we will be back for next season."
In return for his loyalty, Atletico Madrid have handed Griezmann a massive pay-rise - at £235,000-a-week net pay.
However, the side have kept his release fee exactly the same, at £88million, allowing Man United to come back in for his services next summer - which they will, according to Spanish radio station Cope.
United had agreed to match the whopping fee, but after growing frustrated by Griezmann's apparent stalling issued him an ultimatum.
But the stunt backfired as the French striker decided to stick with Atletico, with Mourinho turning his attention to Real Madrid star Alvaro Morata instead.
Griezmann has been at Los Colchoneros since July 2014, scoring 83 times in 160 games in all competitions.
