Wagner has been looking to tie up big-money deals and has agreed a £10million fee for Manchester City midfielder Aaron Mooy.

He is also in the hunt for £8.5million Chelsea winger Izzy Brown, who was on loan at the John Smith’s Stadium last season.

But Williams’ deal has been more straightforward as he was out of contract at Reading and can move without a fee.

Wagner has tracked the midfielder since they were both in Germany, with Williams starting his career at Freiburg and Hoffenheim.

The Huddersfield boss was also a USA international during his playing days despite playing in Germany and starting his coaching career at Borussia Dortmund.

He sees Williams as a player who can add quality to his squad following promotion to the Premier League.

His transfer plans have been complicated by Premier League rules which only allows him two domestic loans, with the players coming from separate teams.

Wagner had Brown and Kasey Palmer from Chelsea last season as well as Mooy and Danny Ward from Liverpool.
