Big things were expected of the 23-year-old following his arrival from Ajax last summer.

However, the winger made just 16 appearances for Boro and failed to find the target once as he and his team-mates dropped meekly out of the Premier League.

And having been informed he did not figure in the plans of new boss Garry Monk, Fischer has opted to join the Bundesliga outfit on a four-year deal.

And speaking to his new side’s website, he said: "Mainz is the right club for me to enjoy my football again.

"Mainz is a beautiful city, we have a great stadium, I want to be a part of this team and this club quickly.

"I want to get in shape and then bring my qualities as an offensive player."

Mainz's sports director Rouven Schroder also added: "Viktor Fischer is a very exciting player with great potential.

"He is also a technically savvy, tricky and powerful attacker, whose quality will improve and make our team more versatile.

"We are delighted that he has chosen a future at Mainz 05."

Fischer started just six matches in the top-flight and missed a chunk of the campaign with a knee injury.

He only appeared once in the final three months of his sole season, that coming in the home defeat to Southampton in May.

The Dane will know be hoping to recapture his form to try and secure a place in his country’s World Cup squad for Russia 2018.

Meanwhile, Fischer could soon be followed out of the Boro exit door by midfielder Marten de Roon.

The Dutchman has reportedly emerged as a shock target for Manchester United, while defender Ben Gibson is being chased by the likes of Stoke, Southampton and West Brom.
