Manchester United name Michael Carrick as new club captain following Wayne Rooney’s departure to Everton
The 35-year-old succeeds Rooney who returned to Goodison Park, while Ander Herrera has been appointed as the new vice-captain
MICHAEL CARRICK has been named as the new Manchester United captain following Wayne Rooney's transfer to Everton.
As SunSport revealed last week, the 35-year-old - who was handed a new one-year deal at the end of last season, has been appointed to become the new Red Devils skipper.
Spanish midfield maestro Ander Herrera has become the club's vice-captain.
Reacting to the news, Carrick told MUTV: "It feels great, it's such a huge honour to captain such a great club.
"Obviously it's my 12th year now and I came as a 25-year-old and I never thought I could be here this long.
"I've been able to achieve so much, so now to try and lead the boys and look after the young boys and guide them in some ways, it's a nice thing to be.
"It's a pleasure, I came to this club as a footballer and now I'm a huge fan and I've grown to love the club over the years and to be in this position is very special for me."
When asked what his style will be as skipper, he said: "I'll just be myself.

"I think you can't change you know, It's wrong I think to suddenly come in a role and then suddenly change and then shouting and screaming at everyone telling them what to do.
"I'm not like that, I'll obviously speak when I need to speak, but I'm quite laid back and chilled out really, and I'll try and lead by example if I can."
Since signing in 2006 from Tottenham Hotspur for a fee rising to £18.6million, he has won an array of trophies, winning everything possible in club competition.
In just the 459 appearances for United, he has won five Premier League titles, one FA Cup, three League Cup's, one Champions League crown, one Europa League triumph and one Club Word Cup championship.
He was named as United's Players' Player of the Year in the 2012/13 season.
