Kop boss Jurgen Klopp feared he had lost any chance of landing his man after Saints reported the Anfield club to the Premier League over an illegal approach.

A public apology was issued and no further action was taken.

Van Dijk, injured for the second half of last season, remains Klopp’s No 1 target and new Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino insists he will not stand in his way.

At one stage Chelsea looked to have jumped ahead of Liverpool in the race to sign van Dijk with a £60million bid.

Kurt Zouma has been loaned out to Stoke, while skipper John Terry was released at the end of last season.

But Reds boss Jurgen Klopp resumed his interest in the Dutch centre-back despite Anfield chiefs having to apologise to Southampton for their pursuit.

The German sees Van Dijk, 25, as the ideal man to fix the defensive issues which blighted his season.

And with Van Dijk seemingly intent only on a switch to Anfield a deal could well be on the way after all.

Southampton have sold some of their best players in recent years, such as Victor Wanyama and Adam Lallana, and it should not come as a surprise if in the end they do let Van Dijk leave for Liverpool.
