He becomes Bruce's third signing of the summer after landing John Terry and Man Utd keeper Sam Johnstone on loan.

Elmo said: “Aston Villa is a great club and I am thrilled to join – it’s one of the very biggest clubs in England and its history and tradition is there for all to see.

“It’s a great time to join too as we look for promotion to the Premier League.

“I will give absolutely everything to help us achieve that goal.

"I know, first hand, what it takes to win promotion and I want that feeling again.”

Bruce bought Elmohamady over to Sunderland in 2010 for £2 million and then to Hull in 2013 when he was in charge at the KCOM Stadium.

Elmohamady was in the final year of his current contract with the Tigers, having been a key part of their side over the past five seasons.

He made 218 appearances for the Tigers, scoring 11 goals and won two promotions to the Premier League with the club.

The Egypt international becomes the sixth player sold since the Tigers' relegation back to the Championship in May.

He is also the third player in three days to fly home from Portugal, after Tom Huddlestone departed to rejoin Derby and Eldin Jakupovic did the same to close a deal with Leicester.

A move to Villa won't keep Elmohamady away from his old squad for long, as the clubs are set to face each other on the opening day of the Championship season.
