Leicester closing in on Coventry striker George Thomas with £500,000 second bid in the offing

Out of contract Wembley hero has attracted interest from Brighton, Newcastle and Swansea but Foxes remain favourites to sign him

LEICESTER City are getting closer to landing Coventry City  striker George Thomas.

The Foxes are involved in a compensation package, given Thomas, 20, is out of contract at the Ricoh this summer.

reports they have already had a bid of £300,000 turned down and are about to make an improved offer approaching £500,000.

Thomas scored for Coventry in their EFL Trophy final triumph over Oxford United but was unable to prevent the Sky Blues from falling into League Two in what, overall, was a disastrous 2016/17.

Swansea were interested but shied away from paying something near to £500,000 for a player who has never performed higher than League One level.

There has also been word that both Newcastle United and Brighton have enquired about Thomas.

But it seems Leicester is the most likely destination, although Thomas could well find himself being loaned out if he does move to the King Power.

Last week Coventry manager Mark Robins urged the home-grown striker to continue his development in City’s first team.

Said Robins: "He knows how I feel. I know he wants to have a look around to make sure that he’s not missing out on something.

“It’s frustrating because he is missing games, missing his training. He knows that and he’s frustrated as well because he wants something to happen.

“Whether it happens or not remains to be seen.

"It’s difficult for him and it’s difficult for us because as we get closer to the season we will be needing to know - and he will be needing to know - where his future lies."
