Samaris has two years left on his deal with the Portuguese club but Newcastle chiefs have already held talks over a switch, report the .

And it is thought that the Greek star, who has 28 international caps, is pushing for a move to England.

However, problems arise over the fact former Real Madrid manager Benitez has already spent more than £31m this window.

And the Spaniard knows his hands are tied with how much more cash he can splash between now and August 31.

Massadio Haidara has been told to find a new club and Emmanuel Riviere has been offered to clubs in Ligue 1, La Liga and the Chinese Super League.

It is hoped those transfers could free up the money needed to bring in Samaris, who has won the league with Benfica the past three years.
