PLAYED seven. Won four. Scored 12.

You can’t really read too much into preseason results, but it’s been a relatively successful one for Sheffield Wednesday on the back of yet another play-off heartbreak back in May.

For two seasons in a row the Owls have had enough to come within touching distance of the Premier League but not quite enough to grasp it.

Several signings following Dejphon Chansiri’s arrival have taken Wednesday to new heights and now there’s an expectation there for fans that has been absent for a number of years.

After two play-off defeats – one in the final and one in the semi-final – many believe that it’s now time for Carlos Carvalhal and his side to take the next step and challenge for automatic promotion.

Finishing second will be more than enough in the eyes of the fans, and while it won’t be an easy task, it should be the target.

It’s been a quiet window after the whirlwind of the past two seasons, with the only transfer so far being the experienced George Boyd.

The 31-year-old comes with lots to offer but there is definitely the need for a couple more signings – most notably a new centre-back.

As a surprise package in 2015-16, Wednesday were able to play exciting, enterprising football, however that took a knock last season as they became a recognised force and somewhat predictable.

Fewer transfers means that there’s no need for the team to gel and that consistency could work in their favour.

Carvalhal’s biggest challenge now will be turning his team’s possession into goals and getting the best out of Jordan Rhodes now that his transfer has been made permanent.

With the talent available in the squad, it’s time the Owls become more than play-off hopefuls.
