Barcelona director refuses to confirm Lionel Messi has officially signed contract extension in wake of 5-1 aggregate defeat to Real Madrid in Spanish Super Cup
Nou Camp giants announced five-time Ballon d'Or-winner had signed five-year contract worth £500,000-a-week in July
BARCELONA’S problems could get a whole lot worse as a sporting director refuses to confirm Lionel Messi has, in fact, signed a contract extension with the club.
It's been a turbulent summer for the Catalans.
Having won La Liga and the Champions League last season, Real Madrid confirmed their superiority of their Clasico rivals with a 5-1 aggregate victory in the Spanish Super Cup.
And Nou Camp fans know they won’t be able to see Neymar don the famous shirt after his world record £198million move to Paris Saint-Germain.
But at least they managed to secure the future of arguably the greatest footballer of all-time — or have they?
When asked about whether the five-time Ballon d’Or-winner had actually signed on the dotted line, Barca sporting director Pep Segura told : “Formally, things are clear.
“But you will have to ask the president, he deals with these things.”
It shouldn’t be anything to worry Barcelona fans who, right now, have many more pressing concerns, and the club made an official announcement about a five-year contract worth £500,000-a-week for Messi.
