Boss Benitez admitted: “It’s a learning process, so we have to learn quickly.

"Maybe it’s too soon for us.

"It’s going to take longer, for sure and my experience in the Premier League is you have to take your chances because if you make mistakes you pay for that.”

Benitez, 57, is at loggerheads with owner Mike Ashley — who was not at the game — over the club’s transfer business.

Toon spent £36.4million on six players this summer — less than Huddersfield’s £38.5m on ten.

Newcastle legend and SunSport columnist Alan Shearer tweeted: “On the evidence of the first two games it’s going to be a long, hard season for @nufc.”

Asked if his team were good enough to stay up, Benitez replied: “Hopefully, yes. I am sure that we will improve.

"We need time, but we will improve.

“I’m not happy because we have lost two games.

“But I think we will create more chances and we will score more goals for sure.”
