  • Thompson said on Twitter: "Vvd on his way to Lfc. Some spending g (sic) going on from FSG."

The 46-year-old played for Liverpool between 1996-2000 - scoring five times in 48 league games, and now works for BBC Radio Merseyside as a pundit.

The Saints have insisted on numerous occasions the ex-Celtic ace is not for sale, but an exit away from St Mary's is looking increasingly likely.

A fee hasn't been mentioned for his impending switch to Anfield, although it is believed that Mauricio Pellegrino won't listen for offers below £70million.

Arsenal and Chelsea have been interested in the defender's services, but as we reported earlier, it seems as though Liverpool have won the race.

And according to the Independent, sources close to the player say he is still confident he will get him move to the Reds.

He handed in a transfer request to force through a move away from the Saints, and pleaded with the club this week to let him leave after a series of rows.

It's been a remarkable last few days for Liverpool fans after their side humiliated Arsenal on Sunday by winning 4-0.

To add insult to injury to the Gunners, they lured away Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for £40m, who rejected Chelsea to sign for the Reds.

While they also brought in Naby Keita on a club-record deal for £48m from RB Leipzig, though he won't link up with his new squad until next season.
