Danny Drinkwater completes £35m Chelsea move on deadline day as club announce deal at 1:30am
England midfielder was a late addition to the Chelsea squad after signing a five-year deal
DANNY DRINKWATER completed a late deadline day switch to Chelsea from Leicester.
The England midfielder signed a five-year deal after a £35m fee was agreed between the last two Premier League winners.
Drinkwater arrived at the club’s training ground to finalise the switch around 10.00pm on Thursday – just an hour before the transfer window slammed shut.
SunSport revealed earlier that Chelsea had lodged a third bid for Drinkwater on Thursday morning.
That was believed to be an offer of £27m plus a further £5m in add-ons.
But they are believed to have upped the ante again in order to persuade Leicester to cash in on the 27-year-old.
Drinkwater said: “It has been a long journey to get here but I am very happy and am looking forward to helping the club win more trophies.”
Sporting Lisbon’s Andre Silva is the man they want but that deal is taking time to finalise.
City officials have been working for the last 24 hours to try to come to an agreement with the Portuguese club.
Chelsea missed out on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who ditched them to instead join Liverpool.
