RYAN GIGGS has claimed he would have started Jack Butland over Joe Hart for England's World Cup qualifier against Malta.

The Three Lions scored four second half goals to win 4-0, but the Manchester Legend has revealed he would have dropped the West Ham goalkeeper after his poor start to the season.

Hart has conceded 10 goals for the Hammers in the opening three Premier League fixtures, as opposed to Butland who has let in just three for Stoke City.

Prior to kick-off, the former Welsh international revealed he feels the shot-stopper on loan from Manchester City should no longer be the No. 1 for England.

Giggs said: "It depends how the season goes for Pickford, Butland and Hart.

"Personally I would have played Butland. You don't want to be chopping and changing your goalkeeper but what is he going to learn from playing Hart?

"You know that he can miss a few games and then come in and he's got the experience to do what he does.

"So I would've (gone with Butland), especially in a game like this when you're not going to see a lot of action.

"In previous years he hasn't been looking over his shoulder but now he's got two up and coming goalkeepers who can be No. 1 for England."

Hart, 30 - has 71 international caps to his name, after making his debut in 2008 against Trinidad and Tobago.

While Butland - who made history in 2012 when he became England's youngest goalkeeper to play for the senior side, only has made a mere five appearances for the national team.

Everton star Jordan Pickford is also staking his claim to be Gareth Southgate's main man, but he is yet to make his debut.
