After Neymar put pen to paper on a world-record shattering £198m move to Paris Saint-Germain, Barca had pursued the midfielder passionately.

However, they failed to get a move over the line and instead moved for former Tottenham flop Paulinho.

Now Verratti has come under criticism from "Ciccio" Graziani following his sub-par efforts for the Azzurri during the international break.

Italy were thumped 3-0 at the hands of Spain and then stumbled past Israel 1-0 at home, with Graziani singling-out Verratti for the failings.

Graziani - won earned 64 caps for his nation between 1975 and 1983 and helped win the 1982 World Cup - said: “Verratti does not make the difference.

"I don’t think he is even worth €50million.”

Verratti has been dubbed as the heir to Andres Iniesta's throne in the Barcelona midfield.

So keen were Barca, they were said to be happy to part with close to £100m... with Graziani clearly not convinced he's worth half that.

So far this season, Verratti has played four times for PSG, failing to score, being booked three times and sent-off once.
