Melbourne boss Warren Joyce, who was in charge of Manchester United's Under-21s and Wigan previously, is delighted to have signed the striker.

He told the club's website: "Having seen Ross’ performances, we believe he can provide an avenue and a strong attacking option for us.

"I’m sure the fans will be excited by Ross’ potential and we hope to get him right and available as soon as possible.”

And after a troubled year under Steve Bruce at Villa Park, the ex-Fulham and Leeds United forward is aiming to get back on the goal trail.

He said: “I’m here to do a job for the team, support my team-mates, work hard for the manager and represent the club in the right manner.

"Hopefully I can show the fans what I can offer the team and I’m very excited about being able to represent this city and its fans at a great club.”

After a prolific spell at Elland Road followed by a goal-laden stint at Craven Cottage, Villa spent £12m to bring McCormack to the Midlands just over a year ago.

After a poor return in front of goal things turned sour in January.

he failed to turn up to training and claimed the electric gate on his house was jammed, meaning he could not get out of his property.

That led Bruce to turn up at the star's house and take a photo of the fence around his home, which the boss claimed was only "four-feet six-inches high" and easily scalable.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at Nottingham Forest before returning to the second city in the summer.

McCormack's only appearances for Villa this season have come in the EFL Cup, where he failed to find the target.
