Barcelona make official request for La Liga clash with Las Palmas to be postponed amid violent protests over Catalan independence vote

BARCELONA have made a formal request to La Liga for today's clash with Las Palmas to be postponed, according to reports in Catalonia.

Voting for Catalan independence takes place today and there have been several clashes with riot police, who are reported to have been forced into using rubber bullets to disperse the crowds.

report Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu had called an emergency meeting to "analyse the situation" — before making a formal request to La Liga.

The vote was declared illegal by Spain's constitutional court — and police are attempting to stop locals from registering.

It is understood around 38 people have been injured in clashes as the day kicks off in chaotic fashion.

And Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont has condemned the "unjustifiable violence" of the Spanish state

A 2015 vote saw Catalonians vote against independence.

Several former Barcelona icons have had their say on the situation, with Xavi calling the situation a "disgrace" and Pep Guardiola revealing he voted via email.

While Carles Puyol insists voting is a democratic right.
