But after playing a key role in the 2-1 win over reigning champions Juventus, De Vrij confirmed he is hoping to extend his stay in Rome.

He said: "Besides playing well as a team there are also a lot of friendships among us, this is a really nice thing.

"I'm very happy to be here. We are talking to the club right now and I hope to find an agreement.

"You never know what will happen. My intention is to grow and improve and make the best decision for my career."

De Vrij's Lazio contract expires in June - meaning he could be available cheaply in January if talks do not progress.

Liverpool boss Klopp is desperate to finally sort out the centre of his defence after two years at the helm.

Southampton star Van Dijk remains top of his wish list despite a calamitous pursuit over the summer.

But La Liga giants Barcelona have also been scouting the ex-Celtic star and could rival the Reds.

Van Dijk has played three league games since his failed move but is unlikely to remain at St Mary's for next season.
