RICHIE WELLENS is set to be named the new Oldham boss - on the recommendation of Paul Scholes.
Wellens has made a huge impact in a five-game spell as caretaker manager and is now ready to be handed the job on a permanent basis.
And one of the people who has helped the former Oldham star get the gig is former Manchester United ace Scholes.
The League One club have conducted a lengthy recruitment process as they looked for a successor for John Sheridan who was sacked last month.
And part of that process saw them consult ex-England midfielder Scholes - who has been a lifelong Oldham fan.
At one stage Scholes was being linked with taking the job himself, but it is understood he has advised them Wellens is the ideal candidate.

Wellens began his playing career coming through the academy at Old Trafford but failed to make the grade.
But the 37-year-old enjoyed a good career playing in the lower divisions with Blackpool, Oldham and Leicester among his former clubs.

He joined the coaching staff at the club last summer, and was handed the role on a caretaker basis when Sheridan left at the end of September.
Since then, he has guided Oldham to four victories in the five matches he has been in charge, with a draw at third placed Bradford the only game they haven't won.
The club have climbed away from the lower reaches of the division and are now eight points adrift of the play-off zone with a game in hand.
