MANCHESTER CITY were left angered by Arsene Wenger's blistering post-match attack on Raheem Sterling on Sunday night.

The Gunners boss said the England winger 'dives very well' after he won a second half spot-kick in his team's 3-1 win at the Etihad.

Yet most pundits agreed that ref Michael Oliver called it right by awarding the penalty against Nacho Monreal.

And Sunsport's Alan Shearer said Wenger owed the City star an apology as he had clearly got it wrong.

City insiders were left scratching their heads at Wenger's comments - given that he tried so hard to sign Sterling just two months ago.

The Gunners put forward a part exchange which would have seen Alexis Sanchez move to the Etihad a few days before the deadline.

Is this a penalty for Manchester City's Raheem Sterling or a harsh call on Arsenal's Nacho Monreal?

City felt their £49million man had actually been too honest when he could have had a penalty in the first half while trying to get on the end of Leroy Sane's cross.

And it was a similar story back in January when Sterling stayed on his feet after being clearly pushed by Tottenham defender Kyle Walker.

Wenger felt aggrieved because he felt - with some justification - that City's third goal should have been ruled out for offside.

He added that both the home team's goals in the same fixture last December should also have been chalked off.

Yet City pointed to the fact they were denied a clear penalty at the end of the 2-2 draw at the Emirates in April when Monreal handled in the last minute.

Later that month Pep Guardiola's men also saw a goal wrongly ruled out in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley - the last time they lost a match.

Sterling scored from close range but the linesman flagged that Sane's cross had gone out of play before curling back in - something replays showed to be wrong.
