David Unsworth, who led them to a much-needed win over Watford on Sunday, was named as caretaker but he is not believed to be among the three frontrunners for the job full-time.

Moshiri has a shortlist of four people, and despite reports Sam Allardyce is set to take charge, Simeone is the top choice according to .

The Argentine is under contract with the La Liga giants and is understood to be happy in the Spanish capital.

But that has not stopped Moshiri from plotting an audacious swoop to bring him to Goodison Park.

It is claimed that the Blues chief will meet his fellow board members later this week to confirm he is willing to back a new long-term manager with serious funding to match some of the biggest clubs in the Premier League.

The Toffees are understood to have met with Big Sam already about the former England man taking over until the end of the season.

Although Sky say reports the 63-year-old had been demanding £100,000-a-week were "totally inaccurate".

Allardyce, who left Crystal Palace in the summer after guiding them to safety, is understood to want a long-term deal but the Merseyside outfit are only willing to offer him a deal until the end of the campaign.

Sky say a source told them: "For Sam to come back into football management, he needs to be excited by the prospect of the long-term project. A deal until next May simply won't do that for him."

A sudden return to work will trigger a £2m compensation package for Palace because he has started work again before July 2018.

Everton director of football Steve Walsh is backing the move for Allardyce, who is understood to be lining-up recently sacked Leicester man Craig Shakespeare as his assistant.

Watford manager Marco Silva is another is the third man on Moshiri's hitlist.
