Negotiations are ongoing but the Toffees believe they finally have their man.

The former England boss had initially pulled out of the running for the role amid a split at boardroom level on whether he was the right man for the job.

But the Merseyside club turned to him again earlier this week after the side shipped nine goals in the space of four days under beleaguered caretaker boss David Unsworth.

Allardyce will be been handed the responsibility of saving Everton from relegation to the Championship following a turbulent first four months of the season.

Allardyce Premier League record

  • Bolton Wanders: 226 games, 80 wins, 66 draws, 80 defeats
  • Newcastle United: 21 games, 7 wins, 5 draws, 9 defeats
  • Blackburn Rovers: 76 matches, 26 wins, 21 draws, 29 defeats
  • West Ham United: 114 matches: 35 wins, 28 draws, 51 defeats
  • Sunderland: 30 matches: 9 wins, 9 draws, 12 defeats
  • Crystal Palace: 21 matches, 8 wins, 2 draws, 11 defeats

TOTAL: 488 matches, 165 wins, 131 draws, 192 defeats

Despite heavy investment in players over the summer the club started the campaign without a recognised proven striker.

Koeman paid the price when he was dumped in October following the 5-2 defeat to Arsenal which left the club in the bottom three in the Premier League.

Unsworth was appointed on a short-term basis while the club searched for a successor - but that process dragged on so long because those at the top failed to make a decision on who to go for.

Allardyce was the early choice, only for that move to flounder with majority shareholder instead floating the idea of trying to capture Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone.

They then turned their attention to Watford boss Marco Silva, the the Premier League club rejected their advances out of hand despite the offer of compensation.

Some at Everton though Unsowrth could be relied upon to stay in control until the end of the season, but performances in the last week put paid to that idea.

First Everton were thrashed 5-1 at home by Atalanta in the Europa League, and then they lost 4-1 at Southampton on Sunday.

The call to Allardyce was made within hours of that shocking defeat at St Mary's, and the 63-year-old takes charge with the club two points outside the drop zone in the table.
