Ferdinand strongly believes Ozil is just the sort of player who could take United to the next level.

After United's 3-1 win over Arsenal, he told BT Sport: “Since he signed in the Premier League, he’s had the most assists and the most chances created.

“That tells you the standard of the player he is.

“When he was at Real Madrid, I played against him.

"He was a different player at Real Madrid from what I’ve seen here.

"The pace, he’s deceptively quick, and if you can get that out of him, with that ability... he’s a technician.

Mourinho and Ozil worked together at Real Madrid and the Portuguese boss has already refused to rule out a move for the playmaker.

And it appears the feeling could be mutual after the 29-year-old went to embrace United's backroom staff when walking off the field.

Meanwhile, reports from Spain claim that Barcelona have thrown their hat in the ring to sign Ozil on a free.
