They have sounded out intermediaries over which full-backs are available in the clearest indication that Sessegnon, 17, could leave when the window opens in three weeks.

Spurs are long-term admirers of the England Under-19 star, who has been billed as Danny Rose’s replacement at left-back, although he can also play further up the field.

United have also been keeping tabs on one of the game’s top prospects.

Sessegnon has scored four times for the Lilywhites so far this season including a hat-trick during his 50th appearance for the club in Fulham's 5-4 defeat over Sheffield United.

The hat-trick was the first for a 17-year-old in the top-four tiers of English league football since Dele Alli in 2014.

The Londoner emerged as one of the country's best prospects for the future when he finished as the joint-top scorer at the European Under-19 Championships.

He scored three goals including two against Germany to help England win the tournament for the first time.
