And he was nowhere to be seen on the United teamsheet as they lost 2-1 to rivals Manchester City on Sunday.

Instead, Jesse Lingard has be drafted in by Mourinho to play behind Romelu Lukaku, with the Carrington graduate offering more pace on the counter attack.

But, according to the , the 28-year-old will seek assurances over his place in the squad.

Just weeks after arriving for £30million, Mkhitaryan was left out of the United side for months after flopping in his new club’s previous 2-1 Old Trafford loss to City.

He was deemed as lacking the pace and physicality for the Premier League and eventually worked his way back in, after following a conditioning regime, before scoring in the Europa League final win.

Mourinho has recently assured fans and the media that Mkhitaryan has simply been rested after playing several games for club and country at the start of the season.

Mkhitaryan started the season strongly for United, with a series of assists as the Red Devils hit the ground running with big wins over West Ham, Leicester, Swansea and Everton.

But he seemed to suffer after Paul Pogba was injured for a couple of months and has slowly drifted out of the first-team picture again.

He played 20 minutes in the 1-0 win over Brighton last month after featuring in two friendlies for Armenia against Belarus and Cyprus, where he scored two goals.
