Harry Kane breaks Alan Shearer’s record for Premier League goals scored in calendar year with opening strike against Southampton
Kane's hat-trick against Southmapton sees him move past Barcelona star Lionel Messi for scoring the most goals in Europe during 2017
TOTTENHAM striker Harry Kane has broken Alan Shearer's calendar year record for Premier League goals.
Kane hit a hat-trick as Spurs brushed aside a hapless Southampton at Wembley to take his 2017 tally to 39 goals.
Shearer hit 36 goals for Blackburn Rovers in 1995 and has already taken to social media to congratulate Kane on his achievement.
Shearer tweeted: "You've had a magnificent 2017. You deserve to hold the record of most @premierleague goals in calender year.
"Well done and keep up the good work."
Kane's second goal just before the break also saw him move ahead of Lionel Messi with the most goals scored in a year across the top five leagues in Europe.
The forward hit his third treble of the season and eighth of 2017 when he colly slotted past Fraser Forster on 69 minutes.
