And now Bundesliga chiefs have taken action and have ordered Herrlich to pay up the hefty amount of cash for his fall.

With 75 minutes on the clock and Leverkusen winning 1-0, home defender Denis Zakaria went to collect the ball as it ran out of play for a throw-in.

Stood in his way was Herrlich, who allowed the ball to run through his legs, much to the annoyance of Zakaria who slightly brushed him aside with the faintest of touches.

However, the action suddenly exploded as the 46-year-old Herrlich threw himself to the floor to start a mass confrontation between both sets of players.

Herrlich told Spiegel: "That certainly looked stupid and happened in the heat of the moment, I would like to apologise.

"The ball came towards me, I let it through my legs so that Gladbach could not intervene quickly.

"I did not need to do that, that was nonsense, then Zakaria touches me lightly, I slide away. I have to, with 46 years behind me, stop."

Despite the former Germany international's apology, Bundesliga chiefs have taken action and hit Herrlich in the pocket to deter any other incidents from occurring.
