ARSENAL are set to keep Konstantinos Mavropanos until the end of the season.

The Greek Under-21s international was bought by the Gunners for £2million from PAS Gianina this month and was on the bench in the 0-0 draw against Chelsea last night.

And boss Arsene Wenger has admitted he wants to keep the defender at the Emirates until May.

Wenger said: "I personally want to keep him until May to know him better, to assess his level.

"The first signs he showed in training were so encouraging that I decided to keep him.";

Mavropanos would have been ineligible for a loan had he come on against the Blues due to Fifa rules prohibiting a player playing for three clubs with similar schedules in the same season.

The Gunners had initially planned to send Mavropanos to German side Werder Bremen on loan to continue his development.

But Wenger has clearly been impressed with the youngsters impact in training over the last couple of days.

And the Gunners also have some injury problems in defence with Laurent Koscielny, Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac injured.

Mavropanos could also be used on the bench on Sunday as the Gunners take on Bournemouth in the early kick off.
