LEEDS UNITED are edging the battle with Cardiff to sign Middlesbrough midfielder Adam Forshaw.

The Elland Road outfit and the Bluebirds are both willing to meet Boro's £2.5million valuation.

But the 26-year-old would prefer a switch to Leeds rather than relocate to Wales.

That would allow him and his family to remain where they are currently based.

Forshaw has yet to play a single second since Tony Pulis took charge of the North East side last month.

Fellow Boro midfielder Adam Clayton has also been linked with Leeds, but it is Forshaw who has emerged as their No1 target.

Pulis has a bloated squad at his disposal and wants to shift several men out of the club before the end of month to free up space for some incomings.

The former Brentford and Wigan star is one of those he is willing to offload.

His last start came in the defeat at Bristol City at the start of December.

Pulis used Sunday's Under-23 match against Blackburn to give a host of senior players who have been lacking action a run out.

However, despite not being included in the squad for the controversial home defeat to Fulham 24 hours earlier, he was not one of those to play for the second string.

Boro currently have five central midfielders on the books and Pulis is open to allowing two to depart.

The Teessiders were linked with a loan move for Liverpool's Marko Grujic.

But maybe due to the situation with Forshaw, Neil Warnock has swooped to persuade the Serbian international to join Cardiff instead.

Forshaw, a former youngster at Everton, has made more than 100 appearances for Middlesbrough and helped them to promotion in the 2015/16 campaign.

He enjoyed a decent run in the side at the start of last season's Premier League campaign, but soon found himself out of favour as the club were relegated.
