NEW research today shatters the myth that buying British is the best way to guarantee success - and identifies Alex Sandro as the man who should top every January shopping list.
Sun Bets carried out an extensive investigation into what makes the perfect defender in this transfer window.
And they found that when shopping for stoppers, foreign players are 14 per cent more likely to succeed.
They looked at the biggest 140 defensive transfers in the January window since 2004 and what happened to the buying club after.
In 62 per cent of cases, a foreign defender improved the buying side’s goals-conceded rate.
And that dwarfs the 48 per cent rate of improvement when buying British.
It is likely that sides nearer the bottom of the table, who generally conceded more goals, buy British players more often than those at the top of the league.
Yet today’s revelation indicates that transfer kingpins should be more comfortable with looking to foreign players.

That is cemented by Sun Bets’ most eyebrow-raising finding.
They found that 82 per cent of clubs improved their goals-conceded rate when buying from La Liga, Ligue 1, the Bundesliga and Serie A.
That is compared to just 53 per cent of signings succeeding from within the Premier League.
The optimum age for a new buy is 26 and above.
Which means that Juventus star Sandro, 26, is the perfect man to sign this month to guarantee an improvement in defence.
Man United and Chelsea have been heavily linked to the left back, who would cost around £60million.
That may seem like a hefty price tag but today’s findings show that, while he can virtually guarantee success, it may represent tremendous value for money.
