Federico Fernandez breaks nose celebrating Swansea’s opener against Liverpool thanks to own team-mate

FEDERICO FERNANDEZ suffered a suspected broken nose caused by his own team-mate while celebrating Swansea's opener against Liverpool.

The Argentine provided the assist for Alfie Mawson to send the Liberty Stadium into delirium just moments before half time.

But his joy soon turned to agony as he was left with blood spurting from his nose.

The struggling Swansea players could not hide their joy after taking an unexpected lead.

And they quickly mobbed the goal hero to share his moment.

But as Fernandez congratulated his colleague, his face was shoved into Mawson's upper arm as another Swan star jumped onto his back - and he instantly felt it.

Fernandez, 28, instantly required medical attention as medics rushed to clean up the mess.

As the teams took their places to restart the action, the South American was stood on the sidelines having his war wound checked out.

And that meant that the Welsh side were forced to play the remainder of the first period a man down.

With blood marks on both his shirt and shorts, he was forced to change his kit before being allowed back onto the pitch.

Fortunately for the Swans, they survived until the break, allowing time for Fernandez to get sorted.

And he emerged along with the rest of the team for the second half, donned in new, fresh attire.

It's not the first time that we have witnessed a football star injure themselves amidst the joy of a goal or victory.

Back in 1993 Steve Morrow scored the winning goal for Arsenal against Sheffield Wednesday to clinch the Coca-Cola Cup.

But as the full time whistle went captain Tony Adams attempted to lift the hero onto his shoulders - but dropped him to the turf.

Morrow suffered a broken arm in the fall and was rushed to hospital in an oxygen mask as his team-mates climbed Wembley's famous steps to lift the trophy.
