The Dortmund fans that were once behind the forward turned their cheers into jeers in the early stages.

The Gunners remain hopeful to sign the 28-year-old despite their two previous bids being rejected.

Arsenal are desperate to sign a new striker after the departure of Alexis Sanchez to Man United but the Premier League side have fallen way short of the £60million evaluation the German side are holding out for.

After the match Swiss goalkeeper Roman Burki stood up for his teammate.

He told Sky Sports: "In the East and West stands, people come [to the stadium] to whistle and boo their own team.

"These supporters have no idea about football and probably have nothing better to do."
