But the ex-England star was unable to board the plane this morning - leading to him launching a furious Twitter tirade at the company.

He called BA a "disgrace" as it later transpired that he was instead forced to travel to the capital by train.

Neville, who was capped 85 times by the Three Lions, also claimed that other airlines such as Flybe, easyJet are "so much better" than BA.

His rant began just before 7am as he wrote on Twitter: "@British_Airways you are an absolute disgrace!!

"But they have a monopoly on Manchester to Heathrow. @flybe @easyJet @jet2tweets so much better!!"

British Airways issued a response to his Tweet and said they were "concerned" by his message.

They wrote: "Hi Gary, we're concerned to hear this. Could you DM us with some more information? We'll certainly see if there is anything we can do."

BA told : "We're getting in touch with Gary to apologise and resolve the issue, caused by difficult weather conditions in Manchester.

"Many airlines operate over booking policies because a small number of passengers, having made their bookings, do not turn up for their flights.

"By careful monitoring of booking and load patterns for each flight, we do our best to maximise the number of customers able to travel on each service."

Neville was travelling to London for Sky's Monday Night Football show as Watford take on Chelsea in the Premier League.

His tirade comes as the owner of BA called for an end of Heathrow's "monopoly" on the airport's terminals, saying competition between third operators would help to lower the costs for passengers.
